Garbage trucks are sometimes called a waste collection vehicle (WCV), dustcart or dustbin lorry. It is a truck
that is specially designed to pick up smaller loads of waste and move it to the landfill or other recycling plants.
There are different types of garbage trucks such as side loaders, rear or front loaders, pneumatic collection and
grapple trucks.
Front loader used garbage trucks usually service the commercial and industrial businesses. They have large waste
containers with lids that are align with sleeves on the container by using a joystick or a set of levers. The
container is lifted over the truck, dumping the waste into the trucks hopper. Once it is dumped, it will be
compacted by a large blade. It is called a ‘packer blade’; it actually pushes the waste to the rear of the truck.
Some used garbage trucks have a ‘pack on the go hydraulics’ which means the driver can pack loads while driving,
thus allowing them to move along faster.
Another used garbage truck is the compactor. The rear loader ‘compacts’ the waste with a sweep and slide system
that will dig into the waste and actually compresses it to a moving wall. The wall moves towards the front of the
truck as pressure forces the valves, which are hydraulic, to open. Or they can be moved with manual controls.
The rear loaders of used garbage trucks are they have an opening in the back of the truck that can throw waste
bags or empty contents of bins into. There are the side loaders as well. These on the used garbage trucks pick up
the trash from the side, sometime with the help of an automated lift or manually. As with the side loaders only one
person is needed to operate it as to three or four being used for the rear loaders.
Grapple used garbage trucks will take bulk waste, such as large appliances, branches, logs and furniture. The
way most collect the bulky waste is with a grapple truck, as they have hydraulic ‘knuckle booms’ which are tipped
with a clamshell like bucket and will sometimes include a trailer or dump body.
Used garbage trucks also had a truck that was called the rotary loaders. These were leak proof and were often
backbreaking work. The containers had to be lifted up around the shoulders in order to empty them into the truck.
They finally invented a hopper that could be loaded from the waist level and then automatic mechanisms would load
the waste into the truck.
